Active learning

Active learning is a core part of Curriculum for Excellence in the early years and is encouraged and supported by Curriculum for Excellence at the earliest learning stages and in early learning and childcare settings.  It is a way for children to develop vital skills and knowledge and a positive attitude to learning.

Using both real-life and play situations, active learning engages and challenges children’s thinking. It takes advantage of spontaneous play, purposeful play, investigating and exploring, events and life experiences as well as focused learning and teaching as opportunities for learning. Active learning can be supported through sensitive intervention to support or extend learning. Find out more about Curriculum for Excellence.
