Alcohol use: recommendations for pregnant women

There is no evidence of a safe level at which alcohol can be consumed during pregnancy. Therefore, current advice for women who are pregnant or trying to conceive is that they should avoid drinking alcohol. There is no 'safe' time for drinking alcohol during pregnancy and there is no 'safe' amount. Drinking no alcohol during pregnancy is the best and safest choice.

Alcohol use in pregnancy can be linked to poverty and deprivation. This impacts on the health of the fetus and is therefore a factor which contributes to health inequalities.
