Becoming a parent is a life-changing event and it can also be an opportunity for many mothers, fathers and other carers to make changes to their own lifestyle, including their mental health and wellbeing. One of the most important things a parent can do is to support their child to look after their own mental health and wellbeing.
Good parenting is fundamental for the development of a child’s mental health and wellbeing. All parents need to be supported and helped, especially when they are parenting in difficult circumstances – for example, poverty or low income, poor housing, unemployment or stressful employment, physical or mental health problems or disabilities).
Special efforts should be made to limit environmental and other risk factors including deprivation and poor quality housing that has limited access to both safe places for play and to constructive activities that are vital for mental wellbeing.
