HEAT targets are a core set of Ministerial objectives, targets and measures for the NHS. Progress towards them is measured by the local delivery plan process of NHS Boards.
The performance management of the NHS in Scotland is an important function of the Scottish Government’s Health Directorate. The current arrangements are intended to:
- Provide focus and clearly set out ministers’ key priorities, and support NHS boards to understand what they have to achieve through clearly defined targets and measures
- Support performance management by giving readily assessable measures
- Provide a ‘whole system’ view of performance across key outcomes and across NHS boards through the HEAT performance management system
The health improvement HEAT targets are reviewed each year and a new suite is published each November. Further information, including the targets for this year, are available on the Scottish Government website
