Impact of gender-based violence on pregnancy

Physical abuse can have a severe impact on the health of a pregnant woman and ultimately the health of her baby. It may lead to pregnancy complications including miscarriage, placental abruption and premature delivery as well as low birth weight.

The psychological impact of gender-based violence can also have a devastating impact on the wellbeing of the mother during and after pregnancy, and after the child is born it can affect bonding and attachment between parent and a child.

It also has long term consequences on mental health, with victims more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, psychosomatic symptoms, eating problems and sexual dysfunction. Over a third of female victims and a tenth of male victims are likely to suffer self-defined emotional problems as a result.
