Importance of healthy weight in pregnancy

It is recognised that diet and nutrition play a crucial role in health promotion and disease prevention. The prevention of overweight and obesity is key, the risk of developing many diseases, including type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and some cancers, significantly increases with increasing levels of overweight and obesity.  Evidence from the World Cancer Research Fund states that body fatness contributes to a convincing increased risk of cancers, such as those of the oesophagus, pancreas, colorectum, breast, endometrium and prostate.

Maintaining a healthy weight before pregnancy can reduce the risk of other ill health and complications. Women who are obese during pregnancy have increased risk of suffering from conditions such as gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia, potentially impacting on the health of the foetus.
