Pregnancy and Newborn Screening Programmes

Significant changes to the Pregnancy and Newborn Screening Programmes are being introduced, change to the pregnancy and screening programme were outlined previously in Chief Executive’s Letter (CEL) 31 (2008)

These changes include:

Enhancement of the existing Pregnancy Screening Programme offered for Down’s syndrome and other congenital anomalies
Introduction of haemoglobinopathy screening, both during pregnancy and for newborn babies
Extension of the newborn bloodspot screening programme to include screening for Medium Chain Acyl CoA Dehydrogenase Deficiency (MCADD)
Introduction of a routine second trimester foetal anomaly scan

Bump Start Evaluation

The evaluation on the North & North East Edinburgh pilot project providing 1:1 support to pregnant women with higher support needs aimed to evidence the benefits of Bump Start to families and to examine some of the areas of challenge for the programme with a range of solutions proposed.

Bump to breastfeeding [1.6MB]

This DVD is free to all pregnant women in the UK, and can be ordered on their behalf by health professionals. It was made to help women begin to breastfeed, and to encourage them to continue to the six month marker and beyond.
