Supporting parents and carers

Emphasising the benefits of stopping smoking, both immediate and long term, can be effective, as can ensuring that parents understand the particular health risks for developing babies and young children. Parents who stop smoking and ensure a smoke-free home can help their children to be healthier and have less risk of illness as children and adults, for example, by reducing the risk of cot death and of the child developing ears, nose and throat problems (e.g. glue ear ) and chest infections/ respirtory problems and asthma. More information on smoke-free homes is available within the 'Ensuring a smoke free home' article
