The importance of parenting

Towards a Mentally Flourishing Scotland (TAMFS) (2009- 2011), emphasised the importance of parenting in defining positive mental health outcomes. Early nurturing and bonding experiences lay the foundations for positive mental health. Exposure to high levels of parental stress, neglect and abuse can have a severe effect on development of the infant and child, both during the early stages of life and longer term. Evidence shows there are distinct differences in development of children living in stressful households compared to those who live in less stressful environments.

The TAMFS action plan called for an increased awareness of mental health and the promotion of parenting skills, providing extra support to those who need it most.
