The role of the early years workforce in promoting oral health

Dental services cannot improve the oral health of Scotland's children alone - health practitioners and the early years workforce in general have a major role to play.  They have a crucial in encouraging and supporting parents and carers to look after their child's oral health by highlighting the benefits and rewards of good oral care that resonates with parents - for example, their child's smile, confidence and speech development as well as avoiding pain due to dental problems and stigma from poor appearance of teeth and mouth.  It is also the responsibility of practitioners to remind parents and carers to register their child with a dentist and to visit regularly (as advised by their dental team).
