What are the early years?

In 2008, the Scottish Government and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) published The Early Years Framework, a key policy that recognises that what happens to children in their earliest years reflects the values of our society and is critical to outcomes in adult life.

The Early Years Framework is one of three key elements of the Scottish Government's approach to alleviating disadvantage and it is being implemented alongside Equally Well and Achieving Our Potential. Together they support a focus on reducing health inequalities and providing children with the best start in life, and create a call to action across health, local Government, community and voluntary sector and national Government in Scotland. The policies set out together how the Scottish Government, local partners and practitioners can give children the best start in life and begin to tackle the significant inequalities faced by children in the most deprived settings.
